Angel’s Envy Port Barrel Finished Bourbon

February 7th, 2013

Summary Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Region: Kentucky, USA Age Statement: n/a Strength: 43.3% Price: $55 Rating: 90/100. First off, I’m a sucker for Port, Rum, and Madeira finished whisk(e)ys. The Balvenie 21 PortWood, Balvenie 17 year Madeira, Balvenie 14 year Caribbean, and Bushmills 21 year all made me sit up in my chair and smile. Adding this pleasing finish to a bourbon is genius. The nose is immediately sweeter than most bourbons. It’s somewhat similar to Woodford Reserve, if I […]

The Glenlivet 18 Year

February 7th, 2013

Summary Type: Single Malt Scotch Whisky Region: Speyside, Scotland Age Statement: 18 years Strength: 43% Price: $90 Rating: 86/100. Not quite as refined as I would like, but the amazing nose and fruity/spicy palate stand up rather well. There is a lovely flavor starting to develop in this that I really liked in my bottle of Tomatin 25 year; sort of a spicy dried fruit. Maybe I need to try the 21 and 25 year Glenlivet bottlings…

Bruichladdich 10 Year (The Laddie Ten)

February 7th, 2013

Summary Type: Single Malt Scotch Whisky Region: Islay, Scotland Age Statement: 10 years Strength: 46% Price: $60 Rating: 92/100.Very, very impressed. This rivals many of the bottlings from the West Highland region in my opinion (Clynelish in particular). The maritime flavor profile is not lost at all and without the peat, you get to enjoy a little more of the fruity and floral notes in this beautiful whisky. Highly recommended! PS – Popping the cork for the first time unveils […]

Glen Garioch 1984

September 23rd, 2011

Summary Type: Single Malt Scotch Whisky Region: Highlands, Scotland Age Statement: n/a Strength: 40% Price: Discontinued Rating: 83/100. The nose start off pretty promising, but doesn’t seem to fully develop. Fresh apple is at the forefront, followed by subtle spice, dust, and brown sugar. On the palate, creme it detected first, followed by cinnamon, lime, and rather pronounced soapy taste (down a few points). Something is a definitely off here.

Johnnie Walker Black Label

September 23rd, 2011

Summary Type: Blended Scotch Whisky Region: Scotland Age Statement: n/a Strength: 40% Price: $45 Rating: 85/100. Another delightful nose; I can sniff as hard as I want and no burn, just flavor : ) Sweet apple and honey dominate, followed by candied fruit. On the palate, the flavors are presented in a silky fashion: apple, honey, spice, syrup, earth, a slight creaminess. The finish is somewhat dry, salty, and woody.

Johnnie Walker Red Label

September 23rd, 2011

Summary Type: Blended Scotch Whisky Region: Scotland Age Statement: n/a Strength: 40% Price: $35 Rating: 89/100. I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised by this. I can tell there is either an Island or Islay malt involved in this blend. The nose is smoky, sweet, and earthy. There is also a fair hint of honey involved. On the palate, smoke and pepper are prominent, followed by old wood, honey, baked apple, and creme. The finish is fairly long; fresh and […]

The Glenlivet 12 Year

September 23rd, 2011

Summary Type: Single Malt Scotch Whisky Region: Speyside, Scotland Age Statement: 12 year Strength: 40% Price: $50 Rating: 87/100. I love the nose on this…I could sniff it forever : ) Fresh apple, mild citrus (lemon?), honey, flowers, caramel, assorted candy. The palate is rich, sweet, and fruity. Honey is at the forefront, followed by the apple, brown sugar, candied walnut, and seaweed. With water, the citrus is a lot more pronounced. The finish is dry, salty, and vegetal. Kind […]

The Glenlivet 16 Year Nadurra

September 21st, 2011

Summary Type: Single Malt Scotch Whisky Region: Speyside, Scotland Age Statement: 16 years Strength: 54.5% Price: $65 Rating: 91/100. It’s been a long day, I’m feeling a little lazy; so, just read the defining notes listed below. A strong, complex, rich, and enticing malt. Recommended!

Lagavulin 16 Year

September 18th, 2011

Summary Type: Single Malt Scotch Whisky Region: Islay, Scotland Age Statement: 16 years Strength: 43% Price: $75 Rating: 92/100. My first experience with this wasn’t so good. I tried it at a particular bar along with Talisker 10; rather disappointed with both. Not sure if my palate was on strike that day or what. That being said, I like to give any whisky a second chance (as I well know tastes can change day to day). At first the peat […]

Bunnahabhain 12 Year (Second Release)

September 18th, 2011

Summary Type: Single Malt Scotch Whisky Region: Islay, Scotland Age Statement: 12 years Strength: 46.3% Price: $55 Rating: 87/100. I really, really didn’t like the original 12 year. I thought the idea of a mild Islay malt was a nice change of pace, but the way it was presented, I thought it came off weak and boring. How is the updated bottling? Well, let’s just say someone climbed to the top of the corporate ladder, sat on the ledge, and […]
